Washington DC Safety Guide for Tourists

DC is a very safe city for tourists in all the areas covered in this guide. Here's what you need to know to travel confidently.

βœ… Safest Tourist Zones

🟒
National Mall & Monuments

The safest area in the entire city. Heavy NPS Ranger, Metropolitan Police and (periodically) National Guard presence. Perfectly safe at all hours, including after dark.

🟒
Georgetown, The Wharf, Dupont Circle

All extremely safe for tourists day and night. Standard urban awareness recommended. Stick to lit streets after midnight.

🟑
Capitol Hill & Eastern Market Area

The immediate Capitol Hill tourist zone is very safe. Exercise normal awareness if walking more than 10 blocks east of the Capitol after dark.

πŸ“‹ Essential Safety Tips

Never use unofficial taxis β€” always use licensed rideshare apps (Uber, Lyft), official DC taxi cabs (meter required by law), or the Metro. Scam taxi operators target tourists at airports and Union Station. Only board vehicles with a clearly displayed taxi medallion or through an app.
DC operates the national "If You See Something, Say Something" security awareness program. Report unattended bags, suspicious behavior, or anything concerning to any uniformed officer, NPS Ranger, or by calling 911. Near federal buildings, security officers are always close by.
A National Guard presence near the US Capitol and White House is common, particularly during Congressional sessions, major events, and around January 20 (Inauguration). This is normal and not cause for concern. Security checkpoints may be in place on Capitol grounds β€” bring ID and allow extra time.
Like any major city, be aware of pickpockets in crowded metro stations and tourist areas. Keep phones in pockets (not displayed on the street), use anti-theft bags, and don't flash expensive cameras or jewelry. DC's overall tourist area crime rate is very low β€” this is standard urban travel advice.
Summer heat and humidity is a genuine health risk for the unprepared β€” heat index can exceed 100Β°F. Drink water constantly, start outdoor sightseeing early, and use free air-conditioned museums during peak afternoon heat (1–4pm). Afternoon thunderstorms in summer can be sudden and severe β€” check weather apps each morning.
